Switch from Natural Gas to a Heat Pump and get up to $11,000!

If you switch from a fossil fuel heating source to an electric heat pump and meet the requirements above, you may be eligible for up to $11,000 in rebates. This includes a $3,000 top-up from BC Hydro in addition to CleanBC's existing $3,000 rebate. This means that eligible candidates can get a combined rebate of up to $6,000 from BC Hydro and CleanBC from just one application!

Additional $5,000 From The Canada Greener Homes Grant

You could be eligible for up to $5,000 in extra government grants. The Canada Greener Homes Grant is a separate initiative with its own requirements and application procedure that must be completed before any improvements are made.

Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pump Rebate

  • Eligibility

    • The indoor unit of the heat pump serves one zone.
    • The indoor unit of the heat pump (head) must serve a main living area (Family room, living room, or open-concept kitchen-living room) of the premises.

    The system must meet all the following requirements:


    • Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of 16 or higher;
    • Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF Region IV) of 10.00 or higher;
    • Variable speed compressor (single speed and two-stage compressors are not eligible); and
    • An AHRI certified reference number that references all components of the heat pump, including the outdoor unit and indoor unit.
Single Head Ductless Heat Pump

Customers who replace a fossil fuel heating system (natural gas, oil, or propane) with a mini-split heat pump system (one outdoor unit and 1 indoor unit):


  • CleanBC Heat Pump Rebate: up to $3,000
  • BC Hydro Rebate: up to $3,000
  • Total Combined Rebates: $6,000

Ductless Multi-Split Heat Pump Rebate

  • Eligibility

    • The indoor unit of the heat pump serves multiple zones
    • At least one indoor unit (head) must serve a main living area (Family room, living room, or open-concept kitchen-living room) of the premises

    The system must meet all the following requirements:


    • Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of 16 or higher;
    • Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF Region IV) of 9.30 or higher;
    • Variable speed compressor (single speed and two-stage compressors are not eligible); and
    • An AHRI certified reference number that references the outdoor unit.
Multi-Split Ductless Heat Pump

Customers who replace a fossil fuel heating system (natural gas, oil, or propane) with a multi-head mini-split heat pump system (one outdoor unit and a minimum of 2 indoor units):


  • CleanBC Heat Pump Rebate: up to $3,000
  • BC Hydro Rebate: up to $3,000
  • Canada Greener Homes Grant: up to $4,000
  • Total Combined Rebates: $10,000

Central Ducted Heat Pump Rebate

  • Eligibility

    • The indoor unit of the heat pump serves multiple zones.
    • At least one indoor unit (head) must serve a main living area (Family room, living room, or open-concept kitchen-living room) of the premises.

    The system must meet all the following requirements:


    • Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of 16 or higher;
    • Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF Region IV) of 9.30 or higher;
    • Variable speed compressor (single speed and two-stage compressors are not eligible),
    • An AHRI certified reference number that references all components of the heat pump, including outdoor unit, indoor unit(s), and air handler or furnace; and
    • Products with a maximum static pressure of less than 0.6" WC are considered mini-split or multi-split systems.
Central Ducted Heat Pump System

Customers who replace a fossil fuel heating system (natural gas, oil, or propane) with a ducted central heat pump system (your furnace is removed and has a fan coil unit and a heating/cooling coil installed in it's place):


  • CleanBC Heat Pump Rebate: up to $3,000
  • BC Hydro Rebate: up to $3,000
  • Canada Greener Homes Grant: up to $5,000
  • Total Combined Rebates: $11,000

Heat Pump Rebate Municipality Top-up Requirements

  • You must have a residential account with BC Hydro
  • Your home must currently be primarily heated with natural gas, oil, or propane
  • The heat pump must become the primary heating system of the home. Old and back-up systems powered by fossil fuels must be fully decommissioned or removed (proof is required)
  • Your invoice must be dated September 28, 2021 or later, and you must apply for the rebate within six months
  • You must meet our general eligibility requirements, which includes living in an eligible property type

Heat Pump Rebate Product Eligibility

  • The heat pump must be listed on the rebate-eligible heat pump list
  • It must be sufficiently sized to function as the primary heating system for the home.
  • A primary heating system must have the capacity to heat a minimum of 50% of the home for the entire heating season to 21ºC

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I install my own heat pump for a rebate?

    No. You must have a licensed and registered HVAC contractor install your equipment to be eligible for a rebate.

  • Can I keep my natural gas heating for the rebate?

    No. Your natural gas heating system must be fully decommissioned before you're eligible for the BC heat pump rebate.
